gokyo - everst basecamp trekking
This 3 week trek follows the classic approach to Sagarmatha (Everest). It starts with a 7 hour drive to Jiri on the border of Solukhumbu. The route passes through the Sherpa villages of Solu-Khumbu over several challenging passes and through beautiful forests and farming country. Once past Lukla we climb to Namche, the main trading village of the Khumbu, where time is spent acclimatizing before continuing via Thyangboche monastery to Pheriche, Lobuje and early morning ascent of Kala Patthar (55445m) overlooking the base camp area and offering superb views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu. Out return to Kathmandu is via STOL aircraft.
Progra itinerary
- DAY 01 : KATHMANDU -JIRI (187km.)
Early morning drive (187 kms/6-7 hrs) to the trek start point at Jiri for the overnight.
- DAY 02 : JIRI - DEURALI
The trail today consists of gradual ups and downs through Mali, Shivalaya and on to Deurali (3000m) for the overnight stop.
- DAY 03 : DEURALI -SETE
The trail from Deurali leads straight down to Thado Khola to cross the suspension bridge and leads on through the river valley to Kinja, then diagonally up to Sete for the overnight stay.
- DAY 04 : SETE - JUNBESI
The trail clims upto Lamjura pass (3500m.), which is the first viewpoint of Everest and descends to Junbesi, which provides good views of Gaurishankar, Number Himal & Dudha Kunda. Overnight at Junbesi.
- DAY 05 : JUNBESI - NUNTHALA
The walk today is up a slanting trail to Solung. The trail then descend to Ringmo Khola and up to Taksindo Pass and then finally descend to Nunthala for the overnight stay.
- DAY 06 : NUNTHALA - KHARI KHOLA
The trail from Nunthala continues to descend to Dudh Koshi (milk river). From there the trail climbs up pasing through several Sherpa villages, terraced fields and forest to reach Khari Khola for the overnight stay.
- DAY 07 : KHARI KHOLA - PUIYAN
The trail climbs up through passing through Sherpa village, a forest inhabited by monkeys, and then passes through a canyon to reach Puiyan for the overnight stay.
- DAY 08 : PUIYAN - PHAKDING
The trail climbs for about an hour after Puiyan to a ridge at 2800m, then up to another ridge. The trail descends to Surke from Puiyan, on a small tributary stream of the Dudh Koshi and climbs to a junction where a stone staircase leads off to the right to the Lukla airport. However it is not necessary to go there, so we climb toward to Phakding for the overnight stay.
- DAY 09 : PHAKDING - NAMCHE BAZAAR
The trail heads beside the Dudh Kosi and continues upstream along the banks to the confluence of the Bhote Kosi and Dudh Kosi. After crossing the large suspension bridge, the trail starts ascending through pine tree forests to reach the distinctive horse-shoe shaped bowl village of Namche Bazar where you stop for your overnight. There are fantastic photographic opportunities on the way as the peaks of Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8511m), Nuptse (7879m), Arna Dablam (6856m) and Taweche (6542m) come into view for the first time.
- DAY 10 : REST DAY IN NAMCHE BAZAAR
Rest day for acclimatization at Namche Bazaar. As the name suggest, Namche is famous for its local market or bazaar. Rising early, those who climb to the ridge above Namche will be rewarded with the stunning dawn and sunrise over the panorama of the Khumbu peaks. The day can be spent exploring this colorful village or walk along the Thami Valley in the afternoon or visit the National Park Headquarters to see the interesting displays of Sherpa lifestyle and culture, mountaineering in the park, flora and fauna.
- DAY 11 : NAMCHE BAZAAR - KHUMJUNG
From Namche, the trail goes high above the Dudh Kosi River, where the views are incredible. On a small ridge across the valley, the monastery of Thyangboche can be seen, a small speck against the gigantic mountain background. The trail then descends to Khumjung for the overnight stop. Here tourism has hardly changed the life of the Sherpas. The afternoon has been left free to assist with further acclimatization.
- DAY 12 : KHUMJUNG - THYANGBOCHE
The trail today descends to cross the Dudh Kosi at Phukitenga (3250m) followed by a steep climb before the trail levels out to ascend gradually towards Thyangboche. It is a steady ascent of approximately 2 ½ hours through pine fir, black juniper and rhododendron forest. Thyangboche is set in a beautiful meadow, high on a ridge surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. The Thyangboche monastery dominated by the gompa with its prayer flags and mani stones was founded in 1916 as a meditation centre. O/N in Thengboche.
- DAY 13 : THYANGBOCHE - DINGBOCHE
From Thyangboche, the trail descends through a forest of birch, fir, juniper and rhododendron, to the nunnery at Deboche. The trail then crosses the Imja Khola, ascending gradually, with the beautiful Ama Dablam dominating the skyline. The afternoon walk follows a trail high above the Imja Khola to reach Dingboche for the overnight stop.
- DAY 14 : DINGBOCHE - LOBUCHE
The trail now is well above the tree line and the journey today heads to Dusa from where it descends to a stream at 4850m followed by a climb of the Khumbu Glacier en route to the tea shops at Dughla. The trail continues along the moraine of the glacier, with views of Kala Pattar and Pumori to reach Lobuche at 4930m for the overnight stay. This is the last stop before the climb to the base camp. Take time to rest and acclimatize for this unforgettable day.
- DAY 15 - 16 : LOBUCHE - KALAPATTER - GORKSHEP - EBC - LOBUCHE
The trek starts out early this morning and will prove to be both mentally and physically demanding. The trail heads on over rough ground to reach Gorak Shep. A walk for a further hour and a half reaches Kala Pattar, a small, rocky peak on the southwest ridge of Pumori. Avoid rushing and do not strain yourself. It is a hard climb, but the view from the top surpasses the wildest imagination. Huge creaking glaciers surround us and classic views of Everest are available. The views from the summit of Kala Pattar (5630m) are truly outstanding. The surroundings have an awesome and unnatural brilliance with Mt Everest rising above them all. Overnights are spent at Gorkashep and Lobuche.
- DAY 17 : LOBUCHE - THYANGBOCHE
The trail today is an easier walk to the lower altitudes. Following the same route back to the terminal moraines at Dughla, the trail then take a different route following the wide alpine valley covered in scrub juniper through the temporary settlement of Phulung Karpo (4343m), then on to Pheriche. The trail continues down to Orsho, then on through Lower Pangboche and down to Deboche, to reach Thyangboche for the overnight.
- DAY 18 : THYANGBOCHE - MONJO
The trek today follows a similar trail through a forest of juniper, rhododendron and fir to Phunkitenga and continues on to cross the Dudh Kosi for a steep descent to Trashinga. The trail continues on to Namche Bazar. Following a steep descent passing the Bhote Kosi, crossing the river, and along the bank to Jorsale, the trek for the day stops at Monjo for overnight.
- DAY 19 : MONJO - LUKLA
The trail continues to descend along the Dudh Kosi, before making a final ascent to reach the Lukla plateau by mid afternoon for your overnight stay.
- DAY 20 : LUKLA - KATHMANDU
Fly back to Kathmandu. Meet assistance at the airport and transfer to your hotel.
